Nutrition for a nursing mother: what is possible, but what is not

Almost immediately after childbirth, it is extremely important to pay close attention to proper nutrition for a nursing mother.

The breastfeeding mother’s diet should be divided into two separate periods. This is the first month and a half immediately after childbirth, where the general diet should be much more rigid and in the second month and a half, where the general diet may well become more sparing.

By following a strictly defined diet after childbirth, it is quite possible to easily avoid a wide variety of allergic reactions, as well as pain in the tummy, the occurrence of gas, or colic.

We encourage you to keep a food diary. This is necessary in order to know exactly and for sure to which particular product this or that allergic reaction in your child could appear. So in the left column you will need to write down which of the new products you have introduced, and directly in the right column – the general reaction to such an introduction of your baby. If, for example, there is a reaction to any of the new foods eaten by mom, just exclude it from your own diet, at least for a month, and then try to introduce it again, it is likely that next time there will be no reaction at all.

New foods in the mother’s diet should be introduced in a very small amount, preferably in the morning, and then just watch the baby for at least one or two days. Why, you ask, in the first half of the day? We answer, if you eat, say, a leaf of cabbage in the morning, you will be able to sleep peacefully at night, even if your baby swells, then such bloating will definitely have time to pass for twelve hours. Try to introduce any new foods no more than three times a week. And if you have already introduced a new product, and, moreover, the baby did not have any rash at all, then you can slightly increase the total dose of consumption of this product.

What kind of foods can mom eat immediately after childbirth:

Firstly, any porridge cooked on water: this is buckwheat porridge, corn porridge, and oatmeal (however, you need to monitor the reaction of your baby), but be more careful with rice porridge, it can strengthen the baby. If your baby suffers from constipation, then definitely exclude rice porridge from the diet.
Secondly, the meat is boiled, possibly stewed, or baked: beef, rabbit, and turkey will do.
Third, fermented milk products: this is primarily kefir, but in small quantities 500 or 700 grams per day is acceptable. When introducing, we always monitor the reaction of the baby, there may be some flatulence with the introduction of kefir. It is acceptable to use cottage cheese, but not very fatty (so, we follow the general reaction of the crumbs), fermented baked milk, sourdough, or yoghurts without additives, it’s great to eat yogurt.
Next, baked green apples (of course, it would be better if these fruits were not imported).
Regular bananas.
Any vegetable oils, of course, not refined: these are olive, and sunflower, and corn oils (but not more than 15 grams per day).
You can use butter (no more than 25 grams per day, add it to porridge).
Almost any vegetable soup (however, without cabbage, and preferably without legumes).
Any not too greasy broth.
Almost any bread, or bakery products, preferably coarse, it is quite possible with bran.
Eggs are acceptable (one boiled egg once every two days, be sure to monitor the reaction, sometimes it happens that the baby’s egg white can be poured).
Almost any pasta is desirable from durum wheat
Any hard cheese (but not too salty or too spicy).
It is acceptable to use mashed potatoes, or baked potatoes.
You can use boiled or baked fish, but only not more than once or twice a week (choose not too fatty varieties: pike perch, carp, cod, hake, or pollock).
It is acceptable to drink a fairly large amount of liquid: it is non-carbonated water, high-quality green tea, or black tea (but weak), dried fruit compote is suitable, or tea with fennel, or any herbal teas.
Dill water.
It is acceptable to use “Maria” cookies, or other biscuit cookies (you can eat it from the first day after childbirth).
It is permissible to eat crackers, or bagels (our drying).
Almost any spices (this is dill, parsley, or bay leaf).
Boiled beets (however, always monitor the reaction). Beetroot can actually weaken the baby, which makes it easier for you to empty yourself after giving birth.
Any stewed vegetables will do (these are zucchini, and carrots, and beets) – however, we introduce them to my mother in the diet only for 2 or 3 months.
Sugar and confectionery products are allowed: of course, a limited number of them (it can be marshmallows, marshmallows, or marmalade with natural dyes) – we do this as carefully as possible.
