How to improve your memory

Many people are increasingly concerned about the question of how to improve memory; what needs to be done in order to memorize the necessary information in the shortest possible time. In order to begin reasoning on this topic, everyone must understand what the concept of “memory” means and how the process of memorization occurs.

Memory is a kind of repository of the experience of a single person, which is equipped with a mechanism for its replenishment (i.e. memorization) with the possibility of its subsequent reproduction.

Memory is divided into two main groups – short-term and long-term.

Neither memory should be underestimated. At the first contact with information, short-term memory works. But it should be remembered that its volume is strictly limited. This type of memory, as it were, acquaints us with information coming from outside. Having first got acquainted with the information, the brain “decides” whether it is important or not. If it is important and interesting, then almost without any effort the information passes into long-term memory. If the incoming information is not relevant from the point of view of the brain, then it will be difficult to remember it.

And it is on the above that all the trick in successfully remembering information is based.

First of all, no matter how trite it may sound, but this is a very important point – you need to tune in. Do not be lazy, sincerely wish to remember this information.

The next important point in working with the text is its comprehension. That is, when reading some text, you must try to draw a parallel with your own experience, make some kind of “hooks” in memory, and inventing an association is also a win-win option.

The following action will be a good training for memory – if the information that is so necessary at this moment does not come to mind, then you should not immediately make life easier for your memory and look into your notebook / phone. It makes sense to try to build a logical chain in your head, that is, quickly scroll through all the events in your head that preceded the moment when the information that was important at that second was received. Thus, a “photo” of what is so needed at this moment may appear in the head.

Reading books is also a good memory development habit. But not just reading, but a brief summary of what was read, the names of the main characters, who especially liked moments, personal thoughts and conclusions. This will not only develop general erudition, but will also help you better apply the second tip – that is, it will be more successful to draw parallels and create “hooks” in your head.

The next good habit can be regular exercise. It doesn’t have to be going to the gym, it could be a general strengthening exercise in the morning or a 30-minute jog in the evenings. The meaning of these actions is to increase the overall tone of the body and improve blood circulation in the brain, which is the basis for the successful functioning of brain cells.

Also, most often a very important condition for memorization is not mechanical memorization, but careful reading of the text. It may sound painfully familiar, but it’s really effective to memorize large volumes simply by solitary, in silence, unhurried, attentive reading of the text. At this time, it is important not to think about anything else but this information. You need to convince yourself that nothing is paramount right now. If, nevertheless, while reading, thoughts disappear somewhere far away, then it is worth going back and reading the paragraph again, explaining each word in your head for yourself. It is not necessary to read aloud. Aloud, even sometimes it is more difficult to perceive. And so, reading more and more information from any one area, it will be remembered each time easier and easier.

And, of course, an important point in all work on the effectiveness of memorization is repetition. It is repetition from day to day that will give good results in working on memory.
