Yoga and excess weight

For many people, being overweight is one of the biggest problems. And the point is not only that glossy magazines and television propagandize that “thin ones are in fashion now”, a lot of weight, first of all, has a detrimental effect on human health. Shortness of breath, scoliosis, high blood pressure, heart problems – these are not all the consequences of extra pounds.

If the problem of excess weight provoked a number of serious diseases, then you should start losing weight. If you believe all the advertising tricks, then there are many ways to lose weight now. You can, for example, go on one of the many diets. But most diets differ in one unpleasant feature – they do not give a stable result. After you, hungry, but satisfied with the result, quit the diet, those extra pounds return. So, it is necessary to increase physical activity. And there is a rich choice: jogging, fitness, swimming, aerobics and much more. However, when you abruptly stop exercising, your excess weight slowly returns.
Does yoga help you lose weight?

It cannot be argued that as soon as you do yoga, you will begin to lose your excess weight. Most likely, there will be no tangible results at all for the first two years, because. Yoga classes do not burn as many calories as, for example, walking or running. Yes, and yoga itself does not aim to lose weight. However, you are unlikely to meet a yogi who is overweight. Many Western studies prove once again that yoga promotes weight loss. Let’s try to figure this out.

Often the problem of excess weight is associated with improper metabolism, hormonal failure in the body, with stress that provokes a brutal appetite and, as a result, overeating. Yoga, unlike fitness and diet, does not deal with the consequences of the disease (overweight and a number of concomitant diseases), but with the causes (improper metabolism, hormonal failure, stress, and others). Therefore, yoga, as a means of losing weight, shows its effectiveness only over a long distance.

The founder of the classical school of yoga, Viktor Boyko, writes the following about weight loss: “When you come to a balanced complex, in which power asanas will be fully represented -“ standing ”from a minute to one and a half, a press for a minute and three approaches to Paripurna and Ardha Navasanam, Chaturanga Dandasana a couple of times for a minute plus handstands – there will be nothing left of excess weight or cellulite. Another thing is that it will take a year and a half or two.

To speed up the process of losing weight, it is advisable to include fitness and yoga in combination with proper nutrition in your daily routine. Then the result will not be long in coming. But remember that as soon as you achieve a good result, and the extra pounds go away, you should not stop there, but should continue to practice yoga.

Asanas. Asanas, or yoga postures, do not heal or heal by themselves. But they trigger the body’s self-regulating functions, which set up deep biochemical processes, including the work of metabolism, violations of which are one of the main causes of excess weight.

Pranayama. Pranayama, or breathing exercises, which only at first glance may seem insignificant in the fight against excess weight, in fact, saturate the body with oxygen, which provokes beneficial changes in the nervous system, normalizes metabolism and improves the functioning of internal organs.

Philosophy. Yoga teaches you to accept yourself as you are now and be happy in this moment. In this connection, there is no need to compensate for internal discomfort with food, i.e. the problem of overeating due to stress goes away by itself.

Yogic food. Yoga gives useful tips on building nutrition, which modern people sometimes forget about. In addition, those who regularly practice yoga notice that the practice naturally fights hunger.

Standing poses tend to burn more calories and body fat as they their implementation requires more effort, which causes an increase in heart rate and an acceleration of the metabolic process in the body. Asanas – Utthita Trikonasana, Virabhadrasana I and Ardha Chandrasana – remove excess fat at the waist, make the hips more slender, strengthen the muscles of the legs, buttocks and abs.
