Quitting smoking is never late

Women who quit smoking have a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease and premature death. This is evidenced by new research by American scientists. The possibility of dying from cancer is also reduced by 20%, and this is typical for a period of five years after quitting smoking. And if you do not smoke for 20 years, then the level of risk will drop to the level of a person who has never smoked. The researchers also calculated that 13% of women die from diseases caused by smoking.

Why, knowing about the dangers of smoking, women still continue to smoke, often even more than men? The fact is that women are sure that cigarettes not only help relieve stress, but also prevent them from gaining excess weight. In addition, for most of them, smoking is inextricably linked with the process of enjoying food and pleasant company. As it turned out, 80% of smokers consider the moment after eating the most difficult to quit smoking.

Smoking actually increases the metabolic process, which slows down accordingly when a person quits smoking. Various studies have shown that, on average, people who quit smoking gain between 2.5 and 6 kg in weight. Dietitians also do not deny the role of metabolism, but at the same time they note that people who quit smoking start eating more and also change their diet, which leads to the appearance of extra pounds.

However, not everyone agrees that by quitting smoking, women will definitely get better. Moreover, research data has already appeared that lead to the opposite conclusion: often smoking does not help, and even does not allow you to lose weight. It turns out that the more a woman smokes, the worse she feels the sweet taste and the more she wants to eat. So, researchers from the Monell Chemical Senses scientific center in Philadelphia argue that in order to enjoy the sweet taste, a smoking gourmet requires a large concentration of sugar, and the longer a woman smokes, the more sugar should be. But whether it helps smokers control their weight remains to be seen.

However, researchers already know that women who smoke are more likely to be tempted to snack. And it is allegedly associated with nicotine addiction. That is, than The more cravings for cigarettes, the more often you want something to eat. First of all, this applies to foods high in fat and carbohydrates.

Now even studies have appeared that claim that, having quit smoking, the fair sex does not get fat, as is commonly believed, but on the contrary, in 75% of cases they lose weight or maintain the same weight. To such conclusions experts of the Italian union on struggle against smoking have come. They followed 64 women of different ages who quit smoking for 9 months. The result was amazing: the women not only lost a few pounds, but their skin, on average, looked 13 years younger.

If smoking does so much harm, what happens when a woman smokes during pregnancy? Scientists from the Japanese Yamanashi University have seriously taken up the study of this issue. First of all, they found out how the addiction of a pregnant woman to tobacco affects the life of her unborn child. For almost two decades, scientists have monitored the health status of 1,400 women from different parts of Japan, and then the health status of more than a thousand children born by these women in 1991-1997. And as a result, they found that the addiction of expectant mothers to tobacco increases the risk of obesity for their children by 2.9 times. Moreover, smoking during pregnancy, even if we are talking about early terms, can affect the health of children for a very long time. The study revealed another disturbing fact. It turned out that when a mother-to-be, rushing to work or for some other reason, refuses breakfast, she also pushes her child to become obese. Scientists have calculated that the children of women who often “starve” in the morning are about 2.4 times more prone to obesity than their peers whose mothers always ate normally.

According to scientists, the child’s body remembers the lack of nutrients that he experienced in the womb, and therefore the children of such women are more likely to gain excess weight after birth, as if storing up fat and trying to hedge against new problems.

Another new study has shown that a person’s attitude to smoking changes depending on his age. The reasons that push a woman to give up this bad habit are also changing. For example, smokers over the age of 65 explain their desire to quit smoking for physiological reasons, as well as stress associated with poor health. At the same time, smokers under the age of 65 blame the cost of cigarettes and their unpleasant smell. These data refute the previous theory of doctors that a person who has not quit smoking before the age of 65 will no longer do so because of his own reluctance. On the contrary, the motivation of older people may be more reasonable than that of younger people.

If earlier it was believed that a person who smoked for 20 or more years would no longer be able to improve his health, now it has been proven that it is never too late to quit smoking. At any age, it will only benefit and help restore youth.
