Intestinal colic in a newborn

In a newborn baby, the digestive system functions differently than in an adult. The baby cannot eat anything other than mother’s milk or formula. And newborns are often worried about intestinal colic, which is manifested by cramping pain.

The cause of colic is excessive gas formation in the intestines of the baby. And there can be several reasons for the formation of gases: when the baby eats a lot, artificial feeding, swallowing air during feeding

For the first time, colic can occur a few weeks after birth. At first, they rarely occur, but gradually it can reach the point that colic begins to disturb the baby several times a day for 1-2 hours. Relief comes after emptying the bowels or passing gases.

There are several ways to help a baby who is often tormented by intestinal colic.

After feeding, you need to hold the baby upright for 15 minutes.
Between feedings, the baby can be offered to drink gastric tea, which includes fennel, cumin, chamomile. This tea helps fight excess gas in the intestines. But don’t forget to check with your pediatrician first.
Say no to tight swaddling, it makes it difficult to pass gases. Let the baby’s movements be free.
During colic, tummy massage helps to expel gases. It is necessary to stroke the tummy in a clockwise circular motion, and also to make flexion and extension movements with the legs, bringing them to the tummy.
It helps to apply a warm diaper to the tummy, it relieves intestinal spasm, reducing pain.
When feeding from a bottle, make sure that the baby does not swallow air.
When breastfeeding, limit the use of foods that increase gas formation in your menu.
Keep track of your baby. If colic does not proceed as usual, the baby’s stool has changed, vomiting has begun and the temperature has risen, call a doctor immediately. These could be symptoms of a serious illness. In no case do not self-medicate.
