The knowledge that a person goes through his development in repeated lives can also be acquired by intelligent observation of sensible existence. In my book "Theosophy", in my "Essay on Spiritual Science", as in my smaller writings, attempts were made to give evidence of repeated earthly lives and their connection, evidence carried out in a form characteristic of the scientific reasoning of the modern natural science doctrine of development. Their purpose was to show how consistent thinking and research, which really brings natural scientific research to an end, cannot do otherwise than present the modern ideas of development as applied to man in such a sense that the true being, the spiritual individuality of man, should be considered as something that develops. through repeated sensual lives and the intervals of purely spiritual existence that lie between them. What I tried to give as evidence there can naturally be much further developed and improved. But the opinion that evidence in this area has exactly the same scientific cognitive value as what is usually called natural scientific evidence does not seem unreasonable. There is nothing in the science of the spiritual that could not rely on the evidence thus presented. It must, of course, be said that spiritual-scientific proofs, of course, can achieve recognition with much greater difficulty than natural-scientific ones. But this is not because they are less strict, but because a person, when he has them before him, does not feel under his feet the soil of sensible facts, which in natural science makes it easier for him to recognize evidence. But it has nothing to do with the strength of evidence as such. And whoever is able to unprejudicedly compare natural-scientific proofs with spiritual-scientific proofs carried out in the same way, will, of course, be able to convince himself of their equivalence in terms of probative force.
