Vitarka mudra (wisdom mudra)

Vitarka mudra

Gives understanding of the laws of life, insight, deep understanding of unconscious processes, non-involvement and stamina. Wisdom is the ability to see things anew, which makes the perception of each fact of life uniquely rich, but not at all burdensome to the mind. Such mobility of perception is a kind of pinnacle, from which only the incomprehensible spaces of abundant reality can be opened. The right hand is half bent. Both hands are raised, the tips of the thumb and forefinger touch each other, forming a circle. All other fingers are extended upwards. The arm is extended forward with the palm facing outward.
This mudra is a universal gesture, perceived even outside of its Buddhist context. She is often present in Christian iconography. Mainly used in the images of the Great Buddhas. It symbolizes one of the stages of the Buddha’s teaching – the discussion of dharma or teaching it. The circle formed by the thumb and forefinger, having neither beginning nor end, is perfection; it points to the enlightened wisdom of the Buddha. This is the mystical gesture of Taras and Bodhisattvas.
Performed with the Gayatri Mantra:
“Om bhur bhuvah svaha
tat savitur varenyam
Bhargo devasya dhimahi
Dhiyo yo nah prachodayat.”
