Strovolos

Strovolos (Greek: Στρόβολος, Turkish: Strovolos) is a municipality and suburb of the city of Nicosia. With a population of approximately 70,000, Strovolos is larger than the municipality of Nicosia and is the second largest settlement in the Republic of Cyprus after the city of Limassol.

History
The name Strovolos comes from the Greek word “strovilos” (Στρόβιλος), meaning tornado or hurricane.
The first mention of the city is found in the Middle Ages, where it is described by the chronicler Leonty Mahairas. The final formation of the city occurred after the capture of the island by the Turks.
After the Cyprus crisis of 1963-1975, the Turkish population of the municipality left it and moved to the northern regions of the island. The very population of the city was replenished by the Greeks who fled from the northern regions of the island, occupied by the Turks.

Education
The municipality of Strovolos has several primary schools and gymnasiums. There are also two private schools – the GC Career School and the English School of Nicosia.
