Engomi

Engomi (Enkomi, Greek ´Εγκωμι), or Tuzla is a village in the east of Cyprus (Republic of Northern Cyprus).

An archaeological monument was discovered on the territory of Engomi – a large city of the late Bronze and early Iron Age, which is identified as Alashia, repeatedly mentioned in the Hittite, Egyptian and cuneiform sources.

History and Research
During the excavations undertaken by archaeologists since the beginning of the 20th century, a multi-layered settlement was discovered, which arose as early as the 3rd millennium BC. e.
According to Claude Schaeffer, Engomi reached the peak in his development in 1600-1050 BC. e. In the XVI-XV centuries BC. e. The influx of Achaeans from Greece contributed to the rapid rise of the city, resulting in the name “Alashia” already in the 15th century BC. e. was transferred to the entire island in documents from the Bogazkoy archive of the Hittite kingdom and other archives of Ancient Egypt and Mari.
The increase in the number of Achaeans among the urban population is indicated by the fact that in 1440-1250 BC. e. Engomi culture was dominated by Mycenaean features. The city then represented a fortification with a powerful defensive wall of cyclopean masonry. Along the cobbled streets stood apartment buildings with crypts located under them – ancestral tombs. Numerous remains of a copper-smelting industry were found in the craft quarter, including copper ingots prepared for export.

At the end of the 15th century BC. e. in Engomi, a royal palace was erected, which existed until the end of the 13th century BC. e. About 1200 B.C. e. the city was conquered by a new wave of Achaean settlers. Next to the restored palace, the temple of Apollo was erected from hewn stone. Around 1050 B.C. e. Engomi has fallen into disrepair.
