Lakatamia

Lakatamia (Greek: Λακατάμια) is a southwestern suburb of Nicosia, the capital of Cyprus.

Geography
Lakatamia is located in the Nicosia area, Lakatamia community. Independent municipality since 1986. The total population in the Lakatamia suburb was 28,466 in 2002. Officially, the city is divided into two districts: Upper and Lower Lakatamia (Πάνω and Κάτω Λακατάμεια).

History
The earliest written evidence of Lakatamia appears in 1436, when Count of Tripoli, Lusignan Peter donated the village to his niece Charlotte. The name comes from “alakatia”, that is, the wells, which, apparently, abounded in the old village. Another version says that the name comes from “Lacedaemonians”.
The population was predominantly Greek, since the conquest of Cyprus by the Turks, many began to settle in Lakatamia. As a result, there were three settlements on the territory of modern Lakatamia: they were Pano Lakatamia, Kato Lakatamia and Kolouras (Πάνω Λακατάμια, Κάτω Λακατάμια, Κουλουράτος).
Until the mid-1950s, the Greek and Turkish communities lived together in Lakatamia. After the riots in 1957-1958, the Turks left their homes and moved to Nicosia. After the Turkish invasion in 1974, many refugees from northern Cyprus appeared, after which the population of Lakatamia grew from 5,000 inhabitants in 1973 to about 40,000. There is a Maronite community in Lakatamia.

Modernity
Due to the expansion of Nicosia’s urban development, Lakatamia has developed into a suburban area and has experienced significant population growth in recent years. In the east of Lakatamia, there is an airfield used by the Greek Cypriot National Guard.
The current mayor is Lucas Yatrou (Iatrou) since 2007. The area also houses the private residence of the former President of Cyprus Tassos Papadopoulos. Lakatamia is the sister city of the Greek city of Alexandroupolis.
