Ma’alot-Tarshiha

Ma’alot-Tarshiha (Hebrew מַעֲלוֹת-תַּרְשִׁיחָא‎ – Maʻalot-Taršiḥa, Arabic معالوت ترشيحا‎ – Maʻālūt Taršī ḥā) is a city in Israel. Founded in 1963 by the merger of the Arab village of Tarshiha and the Jewish settlement of Maalot.

Geography
Located in the Western Galilee, 20 km north of Karmiel, 20 km east of Nahariya, 70 km from Haifa.
The city is located twenty kilometers from the Mediterranean coast, in a hilly area, at an altitude of 600 meters above sea level. The climate is dry and cool. Near the city is the ancient fortress of the crusaders Montfort.

History
The mixed Muslim-Christian Arab village of Tarshiha has a long history; Christian burials dating back to the 4th century have been found on the territory of the village. Tarshiha is also mentioned by the crusaders in the XII-XIII centuries.
Ma’alot was a Jewish city founded in 1957, whose first settlers were from Morocco and Romania. From 1970-1980, it was actively settled by repatriates from the Jewish Autonomous Region of the USSR.

Culture
The city is famous for the annual festival of sculptors, held near an artificial lake on the outskirts of the city. These sculptures adorn the landscaped streets of the city. Maalot is called the Switzerland of Galilee also because of the hilly landscape and clean, mountainous air.
The close neighbors of the city are: the Jewish village of Meona, the Christian village of Meilya, the Jewish village of prestigious villas Kfar Vradim.
