Ninewa

Ninewa (Arabic: محافظة نينوى‎ muḥāfaẓa Nīnawā, Kurdish: نینو Neynewa, Sir. آحافظؐ Nīněwā) is a governorate in northern Iraq near the Syrian border. Named after Nineveh, the ruins of which are located in the province. In the south it borders on the governorates of Anbar and Salah al-Din, in the north – on the governorate of Dahuk, in the east – on the governorate of Erbil. The administrative center is the city of Mosul. Other large cities are Tall Afar, Shergat, Bakhdida, Sinjar, Hammam al-Alil, Bartalla. The predominant religion is Sunni Islam. Place of concentration of Assyrians in Iraq.

Until 1976 it was called the Wilayat of Mosul; The vilayat also included the province of Dahuk. In June 2014, the Islamic State took over the province.
