Dahuk

Dahuk (Arab. دهوك‎, DMG Dahūk; Kurd.: دهۆك, Duhok, Ar.: آ ؘ ؗ ؕ ت ؐ, Nohadra) is a city in Iraq, the administrative center of the Dahuk Governorate. The name Dahuk means “Small Village” in Kurdish. It is inhabited mainly by Kurds and Assyrians. Dahuk is the fourth largest city in Iraqi Kurdistan after Erbil, Sulaymaniyah and Kirkuk. It is located at an altitude of 585 m above sea level, 470 km from Baghdad. The city is home to Dahuk University, opened in 1992.

Climate
Dahuk has a tropical desert climate. Temperatures are typical of Mesopotamia, characterized by extremely high summers and mild winters. Precipitation falls during the cold months.

History
The city was founded in 1236 when Hassan Bega Saifaddin annexed the principality of Badinan. In 1842, the principality was conquered by the Ottomans and the city went to the city of Mosul. In 1898 there were, according to the report, eleven small private schools, two Christian and two Jewish schools. In 1920, there were only five primary schools in Iraq that were available for girls, and one of them was in Dahuk.
From September 22-24, 2005, for the first time, a cultural festival was held in Dahuk, Kurdish writers from all countries were invited.
Dahuk was originally called Nuhadra or Naarda. Even 200 years ago it was a village near Lake Dahuk. Dahuk remained a village until the end of World War I. Since then, the city has expanded. It has grown significantly since 1992. Today it has about half a million people.

Tourism
Dahuk is well developed in the field of tourism. There are many places to visit. Among them are Sulaf, Ashawa and Dohuk Platinum.

Economy
The city of Dahuk in terms of GDP is not the richest city in Iraq and Iraqi Kurdistan. However, many villa blocks are being built in Dahuk, many expensive cars, there are no problems with food, fuel and other necessities, since they come from Turkey and Syria to Dahuk first.

Sport
Sports have a special place in the city. Among the most significant victories are: Dahuk (football club) – Champion of Iraq in football 2010, Dahuk (basketball club) – 4-time Champion of Iraq (2008-09, 2009-10, 2010-11, 2011-12) and 3-x multiple Champion of Kurdistan (2009-10, 2010-11, 2011-12).
