Shamlug

Shamlugh (arm. Շամլուղ) is a city in the north-east of the Lori region of Armenia. Previously, it was part of the Tumanyansky district of the Armenian SSR.
The mayor of the city is Lendrush Bezhanyan (since 2002).

Geography
It is located on the left bank of the Akhtala River, the left tributary of the Debed River, on the Somkhet Range, at a distance of 203 km from Yerevan, 24 km from the city of Alaverdi and 8 km from the Akhtala railway station.

History
Having emerged as an industrial settlement, Shamlugh still plays a significant role in the mining and metallurgical complex of Armenia. In 1996, Shamlugh was given the status of a city.

Economy
Currently, the roads connecting Shamlugh with the highways of republican significance are being put in order. The vital activity of Shamlugh is largely due to the normal functioning of the Akhtala Mining and Processing Plant. Mines play an important role here with their auxiliary facilities and infrastructures. The leading factor contributing to positive developments is the activity of the Metal Prince company, thanks to the efforts of which both the Akhtala GOK and the Akhtala and Shamlug mines were revived. The enterprise is a key city-forming element. Shamlugh, as an industrial community, does not have land at its disposal. In Soviet times, these lands were transferred to the surrounding villages – with the motivation “in order to increase the milk yield of cattle.”

And the lands adjacent directly to Shamlugh, with a total area of about 300 hectares, until recently were part of the rural communities of Arevatsag, Akner, Chochkan. Today, there has been a positive development: the government recently adopted a decree that the territories immediately adjacent to a community should be included in the administrative boundaries of this community. With regard to Shamlugh, this step promises good prospects in terms of animal husbandry, since the local natural and climatic conditions are very favorable for this, and many residents are ready to engage in animal husbandry. Along with this, the gifts of the local forests are traditionally varied and plentiful – mushrooms, apples, pears, raspberries, wild roses …
