Sucumbios

Sucumbios (Spanish: Sucumbíos) is a province in northeastern Ecuador. The area is 18,328 km², the population is 176,472 people. (2010). The administrative center is the city of Nueva Loja.

Geography
In the north it borders with Colombia, in the east with Peru, in the south with the Ecuadorian provinces of Napo and Orellana, in the west with the provinces of Carchi and Imbabura, in the southwest with Pichincha. Sucumbios is one of the six provinces of Ecuador located in the Amazon basin. The western part of the province belongs to the foothills of the eastern Andes, where most of the rivers of Sucumbios originate. The highest point of the province is the active volcano Reventador. The eastern part of the province is flat, flat, with high average temperatures throughout the year. Major rivers: Aguarico, Napo, Putumayo and Coca.

History
Before the discovery of oil in the bowels of the province, Sucumbios was an unexplored region where only indigenous Indian peoples lived. In 1979, 9 years after its founding, Nueva Loja becomes the center of the canton in the province of Napo. In 1989, Sucumbios becomes the 21st province of Ecuador. Oil fields today make the province very important for the country’s economy as a whole.
