Puerto Baquerizo Moreno

Puerto Baquerizo Moreno (Spanish: Puerto Baquerizo Moreno) is a city located in the west of the island of San Cristobal, which is part of the Galapagos Islands (Ecuador). Puerto Baquerizo Moreno is the center of the province of Galapagos, as well as one of its three cantons of San Cristobal. According to the 2010 census, the population of the city of Puerto Baquerizo Moreno was 6,672.
The city got its name in honor of Alfredo Baquerizo Moreno (1859-1951), President of Ecuador in 1916-1920.

History and Modernity
A seaport and an airport were built in the city, and a branch of the Ecuadorian naval forces was opened. The Galapagos Academic Institute of Arts and Sciences (GAIAS) was also opened, which is a branch of the University of San Francisco in Quito. Near the city is the interpretive center of the Galapagos National Park.
In recent decades, the tourist industry of the city has been developing at a rapid pace. If in 1991 there were only 6 hotels and 9 restaurants and bars in the city, by 2006 their number increased to 23 and 35, respectively.

Geography
Puerto Baquerizo Moreno is located in the west of San Cristobal Island, the easternmost island of the Galapagos archipelago.
Near the city is San Cristobal Airport (IATA: SCY, ICAO: SEST) – one of the two civilian airports serving the Galapagos Islands.
