Guaranda

Guaranda (Spanish: Guaranda) is a city in Ecuador, the administrative center of the Bolivar province. Guaranda was named after the leader of the ancient Indians.

History
The city was founded by Spanish pioneers in 1571, but was officially recognized only in 1811. Guaranda was seriously damaged by the earthquakes of 1674 and 1775, but both times it was restored. Independence Day is celebrated by the city on November 10, the day of complete independence from the Spaniards.

Geography
Located in the central part of the country, 150 km northeast of Guayaquil and 220 km south of Quito, at an altitude of 2668 m above sea level. Most of the days, in good weather, the Chimborazo volcano is clearly visible from the city.
