Diving in Chernogorii

Many tourists come to Montenegro to enjoy the beautiful nature, sunbathe on the beach and swim. There is also another category of travelers who dream of getting to know the underwater space of the Adriatic Sea, plunging into the world of incredible colors, species and life forms.
The depths of the Montenegrin Adriatic delight with their picturesque limestone caves, schools of fish and a huge amount of corals. Divers are especially attracted by sunken ships located in the coastal waters of Petrovac, Ulcinj, Bar, Risan, Kotor and Herceg Novi. Some ships have been given the status of archaeological monuments.
Diving in Montenegro is available for both beginners and professionals. There are many diving clubs in the country, where highly qualified instructors work. Tourists will have the opportunity not only to dive into the waters of the Bay of Kotor, but also to explore the bottom of the open sea. Of course, Montenegro is not able to compete with Egypt, but even here you can find many unique wrecks and bewitching landscapes.

“Goritia”
The wreckage of the steamship “Goritia” rests at the bottom near the island of Ada Bojana. The hull of the ship is horizontal, and the missing bow stern is located at a distance of about 30 meters from it.
The depth here is relatively small, not exceeding 16 meters. However, visibility is not excellent. The fact is that in the immediate vicinity of this place is the mouth of the river, the course of which brings a lot of silt.
The upper part of the ship’s hull is densely covered with mud and shells, and the lower part is covered with a thick layer of sand. Even a novice diver can go down to the steamer. As for swimming in the interior, it is advisable to do this in the company of experienced scuba divers.

“Carola”
This ship sank near Ulcinj during the First World War. At the beginning of the last century, it was used as a cruise liner that plowed the Mediterranean expanses far and wide. In 1916, the Carola collided with a steamship called the Matyas Kiraly, causing it to sink to a depth of 18 meters. Thanks to the crystal clear water, you can see in detail all the remains of the wrecked ship.

“Quinto”
The Italian cargo ship Quinto was sunk by a Greek submarine near the city of Bar in 1940. The ship’s hull is literally torn apart, so everyone will be able to freely inspect the “innards” of the bulk carrier. The wreck is located at a depth of more than 30 meters.

“Zenta”
This is one of the most beautiful ships that once belonged to the Austro-Hungarian fleet. In 1914, near Petrovac, a naval battle took place, the outcome of which was the death of a destroyer, which plunged to a depth of over 70 meters. Visibility here directly depends on the current. This location is suitable exclusively for professional divers.

Lustica Peninsula
In Montenegro, “wall diving” or diving along steeply descending underwater cliffs is also popular. Entire biosystems of bizarre marine organisms cover these stone walls. The peninsula of Lustica is famous for the Golden Harbor, where at a depth of 12 meters there is the Blue Cave, beloved by divers.
On the same peninsula, but only in the bay called Mala Gora, there are two underwater grottoes, the entrance to which is a perfect oval. The depth here reaches 45 meters.
