Choosing a dog breed. Elena A. Kozheva

Among the shortcomings, one can single out the love to “talk” typical of all spaniels, that is, to bark out of place and at any time. By nature, he is friendly, well trained and ... no less well manipulates the owner. How often do we see spaniels fattened to an indecent state, and all because the owner cannot refuse these always sad eyes full of unshed tears. But be careful, the Spaniel is very easy to spoil, and when you try to perform any necessary procedure, whether it be cutting the claws or giving a pill, you can easily feel the sharpness of his teeth on yourself. Spaniel, of course, is not a Rottweiler, but I advise you to succumb to his charm to certain limits.

Except кокеров у нас изредка встречается кавалер кинг чарльз спаниель . This is already a purely decorative dog, very famous in the West.

In recent years, the charming pug, the favorite of one of the English queens, has gained more and more popularity. A very ancient breed, according to one version, it came to Europe from the east. An excellent lap dog in all respects, just remember his short nose and, accordingly, his tendency to snore.

A miniature copy of the Giant Schnauzer is the Miniature Schnauzer. Clockwork character, spectacular color make it a popular show dog. Like all schnauzers and terriers, it needs trimming. And also, like a spaniel, he likes to bark for a long time and tastefully at everyone and all.

The Japanese Chin is another Eastern, or rather Far Eastern, breed of small toy dogs. The kindest character, very easy to keep coat, small size, bright, eye-catching color. In general, sheer pleasure, not a dog.

Perhaps the most common medium-sized dogs are dachshunds. Except такс стандартного размера, есть еще карликовые и совсем миниатюрные — кроличьи. The last two varieties, in turn, are also divided into three types according to the nature of the coat: smooth-haired, long-haired, wire-haired. Their character differs little from standard dachshunds. It is believed that long-haired varieties have a softer, more accommodating character, since spaniel-type dogs were used in their breeding. In contrast, wirehaired ones are more strict. They have the blood of small terriers.

A large group of small terriers includes such breeds as Scottish Terrier, Skye Terrier, Bedlington Terrier, Sealyham Terrier, Norfolk Terrier, Norwich Terrier, Lakeland Terrier, Wheaten Soft Terrier, Border Terrier, West Highland White Terrier. All of them are united by similar character traits. Devotion to the owner, fearless behavior, temperament, mobility. Along with this, each breed has its own distinctive features. Skye terriers, for example, really dislike familiarity, especially from strangers. They замкнуты и недоверчивы. They have not been used for hunting for a long time because of their long, peculiar coat. The West Highland White Terrier and the Sealy Ham Terrier, on the other hand, are much more outgoing. The first is a favorite show dog in the West. Norfolk, Norwich and Border Terriers are very popular in their homeland of England. Balanced character, small size, ease of maintenance - these are their main features. Scottish Terriers are energetic, hardy with a well-developed watchdog instinct.

Separately, I would like to say about the Moscow toy terrier. A very young breed, but already gaining popularity due to its miniature size, character, combining tender love for the owner with extreme distrust of strangers, ease of maintenance. The toy terrier, like the chihuahua, is easily trained to go about his business in a cat bowl.

As hypoallergenic, breeders advertise their pets Chinese crested and hairless Mexican dogs. Indeed, their hairless bodies do not cause allergies to dog hair due to the absence of such. True, only a hairless Mexican dog is absolutely bald. The Chinese Crested has two varieties born in the same litter. One so-called downy - entirely covered with delicate sparse wool. The second has hair on the ears, tail and paws. Except того, у них более высокая температура тела по сравнению с другими породами. In ancient times, they were planted on sore spots for stomach pain, colds, heart attacks.

The Brussels and Belgian Griffons have an unusual appearance. Their short, pug-like muzzle and hard, sticking out hair in all directions make them look like funny little devils. And the small size and calm nature, simplicity in content attract an increasing number of fans.

Mention should be made of the French breed Papillon (butterfly dog). We have it represented by single copies. Her niche was occupied by the Moscow toy terrier, very similar to her, but less expensive.

The Pembroke Welsh Corgi is another popular breed in its homeland (England), but rare in our country. Apparently, this is due to their rather rustic appearance. But under it lies a wonderful character, calm, thoughtful, not without charm.

Two Chinese breeds, Chow Chow and Shar Pei, stand out for their spectacular and unusual appearance. Chow Chow is ideal as a companion for calm, melancholy people. Already in puppyhood, they show their restrained contemplative nature, while their peers frolic and play among themselves. With age, this trait of their character only intensifies. It should be remembered that Chow Chows also have a pronounced sense of dignity, they are independent and sometimes stubborn. Therefore, in dealing with them, it is necessary to respect their nature.

Shar Pei is very similar to Chow Chow in character. Just a little softer. A special warning for future Shar-Pei owners. More recently, some two decades ago, Shar Pei was considered the rarest dog in the world. The ensuing craze for their exotic appearance led to the creation of such lines of dogs, where the craze for folding led to the appearance of chronically ill animals. skin in these folds, located throughout the body, were not ventilated, which led to constant diaper rash and the development of skin diseases. And the abundance of folds on the muzzle led to inversion of the eyelids and forced the owners to perform repeated operations. In this regard, a few years ago, the FCI tightened the requirement of the standard, allowing only a moderate amount of folds on the muzzle and back, closer to the neck. It should be said that the original type of Chinese sharpei was just that. Therefore, do not be fooled by the advertising tricks of those breeders who offer super-folded puppies. You won't run into problems.
Outbred dogs
I would like to talk about this motley company in particular. It consists mainly of husky-like mongrels and the most varied crosses between them and thoroughbred dogs. I often encountered the arrogant and dismissive attitude of the owners of high-born handsome men, whose pedigrees, sometimes, their owners can envy. But a person holding an ordinary mongrel, in essence, is a true lover of a dog's soul. He will never go to exhibitions in order to show off and assert himself in the eyes of others. He will not treat his pet from a consumer point of view, as, for example, a hunter to his hound or greyhound. By no means do I want to say that all owners of thoroughbred dogs do not like them. I own a purebred dog. We just have to honestly admit to ourselves that when we get them, we follow our own interests: be it a dog for protection, for hunting, for beauty, for prestige, etc. And these interests often go beyond what is permitted. Has anyone ever wondered what a dog's luxurious coat costs? An American Cocker who shines in the ring spends most of his life in a cramped cage, from which he is taken out for feeding, walking and grooming. Believe me, under normal conditions, keeping an ideal hair-to-hair hair is incredibly difficult, so it’s easier for such would-be professionals to put an animal in a cage. Or a poodle with a cloud of hairspray blown into its nose to set its hair. Or a hound workhorse, honestly doing its job, and its owner treats it like a tool. Of course, these are extreme and few cases. Most owners still show love for their dog. It's just that the owner of a mongrel dog is the purest in his love for the animal.

Most mongrels are picked up from the street or taken from shelters, and many may say that such a dog is too dirty, infested with fleas and parasites. Fleas and parasites can be expelled, the dog can be washed. But if you take a thoroughbred puppy, and then a hereditary incurable disease is found in him. What then?

The only serious difficulty in getting a purebred puppy is not knowing its future character. After all, breeds bred for certain purposes also have certain character traits. And these properties are described in breed standards. Therefore, to a person who decides to take a "purebred" mongrel, I advise you to take a closer look at it, to feel whether it is your dog or not.

I only applaud the person who took pity on a discarded puppy and adopted it. Just remember that the exceptions are adult, feral dogs, that is, those that were born and raised on the street. Of course, you can hope for a miracle, and you can accustom an adult street mongrel to life in an apartment, but the chance, to put it mildly, is small. Most likely, after your mutual torment, she will again fall into the street. And often such attempts can be downright dangerous. Of course, a street dog is not a wild beast from the African jungle, but also a beast. Such a dog can always be distinguished if you are careful. She behaves confidently: either she runs somewhere about her business, or she calmly rests. On the contrary, a dog thrown out of
