Volkswagen, Volkswagen

The history of the Volkswagen car began in 1933 on the orders of Hitler, who demanded the creation of a reliable and inexpensive car for the German people. The first VW was developed on the basis of the Porsche Typ 60 by the German designer Ferdinand Porsche.

In 1934, preparations began for the creation of three more models that would meet Hitler’s requirements. Only ten months were given to create sketches, but they were developed only after two years. In 1937, the Volkswagenwerk GmbH was born. The main condition for the production of VW cars was the construction of a completely new plant, which appeared in 1938. During the war, several new models were developed that were successfully used to transport personnel of the German army.

After the war, the plant came under the control of the British, who launched mass production of cars on it. Orders began to come from other European countries. In 1949, the Volkswagen-Finanzierungs-Gesellschaft GmbH was established, which promotes the brand in the domestic market. The export of cars also improved and 27 years after the war, VW was ahead of Ford and became the best-selling car. In the 60s, more and more factories appeared abroad, new models and modifications were being developed. In 1965, VW bought Audi from Daimler-Benz. Since then, Audi AG has been a subsidiary of VW. The company also includes Skoda and Seat.

In the 70s, the ancestors of modern VW cars appeared – Passat, Golf, Polo. While new cars were being developed, the company suffered billions in losses, but as soon as the new Golf was released, the situation changed. Three years later, the millionth car of this model was produced.

In terms of the number of sales, the absolute leaders of the VW concern are Passat and Golf.
