Hermel

Hermel (Arabic: الهرمل‎) is a city in northeastern Lebanon, in the Beqaa province. The administrative center of the Hermel district.

Geography
The city is located in the northern part of the province, on the territory of the plain of the same name, on the left bank of the Orontes River, at a distance of approximately 73 kilometers northeast of the city of Zahle, the provincial capital, and at a distance of 95 kilometers northeast of the country’s capital, Beirut. The absolute height is 696 meters above sea level.

Population
The city’s population was estimated at 24,678 in 2013.

Sights
In the vicinity of the city there is a pyramid (en: Kamouh el Hermel), built in the 1st or 2nd century BC. e. Also near Hermel there are a number of monuments dating back to the pastoral Neolithic period.

Civil War in Syria
On May 28, 2013, the city was shelled by militants stationed at that time in the Syrian city of Al-Qusayr. Three rockets exploded on the territory of the city, while three civilians were injured.
