Risocarpaso

Rizokarpaso (Greek Ριζοκάρπασο, Tur. Dipkarpaz) is a city in Cyprus, located on the Karpas Peninsula and is the largest settlement on it. It is located in the northeastern part of the peninsula. Since 1974, it has been part of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, which is not recognized by the international community, where it administratively belongs to the Trikomo region, although according to the administrative division of the Republic of Cyprus, it is part of the Famagusta region.

The population of the city in 2006 was about 5,300 people. The main occupation of the population is agriculture, including the cultivation of tobacco. There is a tobacco factory.

Not far from the modern city, closer to the Mediterranean coast, the city of Karpasia appeared in ancient times, which already in the 4th century became the center of the bishopric, abolished by the Lusignans, who in 1222 resettled the Greek bishop of Famagusta in Rizokarpaso, which caused its growth. Rizokarpaso, predominantly inhabited by Greeks, became the center of the district. In 1974, the city was occupied by Turkish troops, which caused a massive outflow of the Greek population to the southern part of the island, although currently about 250 Greeks live in the city under the protection of the UN mission, mostly representatives of the older generation, which makes the Greek community of Rizokarpaso the largest in TRNC.

Among the sights of the city are the churches of St. Synesius, built during the period of the Kingdom of Cyprus, which served as the residence of the bishop, and the Church of the Trinity. Not far from the city are the remains of the Basilica of Agios Philon, built in the 5th century in the city of Aphrodision.
