El Hadjer

Al-Hajjara (Arabic ‎; English Al-Hajjarah, sometimes spelled Al-Hajarah or Al-Hajjara) is a village in Yemen, located in the governorate of Sana’a.

Location
This former market town in the southwest of Sana’a Governorate in the mudiriya of Manaha, along the Sana’a el Hodeidah road in the mountainous region of Jabal Haraz, west of Manaha city.

Description
El Hadjera, was once a city. This is one of the most impressive settlements in the mountains of Yemen. It was built on the edge of the abyss and is famous for its tall houses, which are built on rocky slopes. Its fortified houses, built from stones mined from a nearby quarry, blend in with the surrounding area. They are made of massive blocks of stones not bonded with lime mortar and form a continuous line of bastions. These buildings are a vivid example of national Yemeni architecture.

History
The citadel was founded in the 12th century by the Sulaihids and became an important fortification during the Turkish occupation of Yemen due to the strategic importance of the location.
