Money, currency exchange, cards, transfers

The Israeli shekel has not changed in the last 20 years. In circulation there are coins worth 5, 10, 20 and 50 agorot, and coins worth 1, 5, 10 shekels. Banknotes of 20, 50, 100 and 200 shekels. Please note that 200 NIS banknotes are not always easy to exchange when buying and therefore one should refrain from receiving them during the exchange of money.
You can exchange money on the street – at a money exchange office, at ATMs and at any central bank in Israel (Hapoalim, Leumi, Discount, Benleumi and Mizrahi).

Banks: The exchange of money in a bank is associated with the payment of a certain commission fee. When exchanging money on the street, you will not be charged a commission, but you will receive a lower exchange rate than in a bank.
If you have chosen to use the services of a bank, try not to exchange money on Sunday – Israeli banks are open, but on Sunday there is no foreign exchange trading in the world. For this reason, banks charge a higher fee than on other days of the week.

ATMs: On the streets of Israel there are many automatic machines for receiving money and banking information – the so-called cashomats. They are connected to the banking system in America and Europe. When using an ATM, you will pay a fee to the company that provided you with a credit card in addition to the customs fee of the cash machine ($ 3.5 + 4% of the total amount of money received).
The credit card company (Visa, Mastercard, Diners, American Express, etc.) will set the exchange rate. This will usually be the highest rate for that day.

Exchange office: Usually, changing money on the street is cheaper than in a bank or cash machine. If you choose to use a money changer, compare prices at nearby locations to get the lowest rate.

Checks: Some Israeli businessmen will accept checks from tourists, but most will refuse to do so. You will be able to cash checks at every branch of the Israel Post, without a fee. You can send cash to the post office using Western Union services. They transfer money to and from abroad in minutes and without a bank account.
