History
Thira was founded about 400 years ago. Since 1952 Tire has been given the status of a local council, since 1991 – the status of a city.

Population
According to the Israel Central Bureau of Statistics, the population for 2016 is 24,873.
The population is almost entirely Arab, 99.5% of the inhabitants are Muslims.
The population growth rate in 2001 was 2.8%, in 2008 – 2%. Overall, the population nearly doubled between 1983 and 2004. The average age of residents in 1994 was 23 years, more than 40% of the population are minors.

According to the 2004 census, 10 percent of men and women have higher education; about 60% of men and 50% of women have completed secondary education (12 grades); 3 percent of men and 10 percent of women have no formal education. 60% of able-bodied men and 24% of women were employed in 2004, of which 82% were employees.
