Kiryat Ono

Kiryat Ono (Hebrew קִרְיַת אוֹנוֹ‏‎) is a city in the center of Israel, part of the Tel Aviv metropolis. Founded in 1940 by a core of 40 newly arrived families as an agricultural village, located at that time (before the founding of the State of Israel) in the middle of swamps and a hostile Arab environment.

The name Kiryat-Ono comes from the name of the ancient city mentioned in the Book of the Prophets (Nechemia vav/bet), as well as in the Scriptures (Divrey Hayamim Aleph het/Yud bet). According to the tradition adopted in Israel to name new cities after those who once existed there (in order to emphasize the continuity of the current Israeli state with the ancient one), Kiryat Ono borrowed the name Ono from the disappeared city. As for the prefix “Kiryat”, characteristic of many Israeli cities, it simply means a town.

Like other “cities” that make up the Gush Dan metropolis (Greater Tel Aviv), Kiryat Ono cannot be perceived in isolation from the “cities” surrounding it. In fact, Kiryat Ono is currently considered a prestigious and comfortable area of Gush Dan, whose residents mostly work in the business centers of Tel Aviv. The population of Kiryat Ono is almost exclusively secular. There are relatively few immigrants from the former USSR among them.

Kiryat Ono is adjacent to Ramat Gan, Petah Tikva, Savyon and other towns.
