Vale

Vale (Georgian ვალე) is a city in the southwestern part of Georgia. It is located in the region of Samtskhe-Javakheti, 12 kilometers from the center of the Akhaltsikhe region.

The city stands on the right bank of the Potskhovi River (a tributary of the Kura) at an altitude of 1,000-1,200 meters above sea level, on the slopes of the Lesser Caucasus.

Known as a village since the 10th century. In Soviet times, it became the center of the coal mining industry and received city status in 1962.

The city has a church built in the 10th century and rebuilt in the 16th century. Valais has a large Greek Catholic community.
