Tsageri

Tsageri (Georgian ცაგერი) is a city in northern Georgia, the center of the Tsageri district of the Racha-Lechkhumi region and Lower Svaneti.

Population 1.9 thousand inhabitants (2002). It is located on the right bank of the Tskhenistskali River, a tributary of the Rioni.

In the Middle Ages, there was an episcopal chair in Tsageri. Vakhushti Bagrationi mentions the beauty of the cathedral in Tsageri. At the end of the 19th century, the cathedral was heavily rebuilt, the frescoes were destroyed. The cathedral is still the residence of the Bishop of Tsageri and Lentekhi.

During the period as part of the Russian Empire, Tsageri was the administrative center of the Lechkhum district.
