Sachkhere

Sachkhere (Georgian საჩხერე) is a city (until 1964 – a settlement), the center of the Sachkhere region of Georgia.
Population – 8.1 thousand inhabitants (2009).
Located on the river Kvirila (a tributary of the Rioni). Terminal railway station of the branch (48 km) from Zestaponi (on the Samtredia-Tbilisi line of the Georgian Railway).

Sachkhere Municipality
Sachkhere is located in the extreme east of Imereti. On the territory of the district there is a part of the Sachkhere-Chiatura plain, densely built up with villages, and a large mountainous area, which occupies more than half of the area of the district. The valley of Kvirila is not particularly beautiful here – near Chiatura it is much more spectacular.
On the territory of the district there are a couple of fortresses and more than a dozen temples, although these are all little-known objects, rarely visited by tourists. Probably the most interesting thing is the fact that since the end of the 15th century, the lands of the Tsereteli princes, the Tsereteli family fortress – Modinakhe (in Sachkhere) and the Jruchi family monastery have been located in the area since the end of the 15th century.
There are few roads in the area. One road leads to Chiatura, and another one to the south, to the Khashuri region, and the road is good. Despite the proximity of Ossetia, there are no checkpoints and no police activity at all.
The rest is impassable dirt roads and trails. To the north, to the Oni region, there are no roads – there are only paths and one pass. The road to Ossetia is blocked.

Famous Natives
Giorgi Asanidze is a Georgian weightlifter, Olympic champion in 2004.
