Bolnisi

Bolnisi (Georgian ბოლნისი) is a city in the Kvemo Kartli region of Georgia. The population of the city is 11.6 thousand people. (2010), the ethnic composition is mixed, the population of the region is mainly Azerbaijani.

History
The city was founded under the name Choruk Kemerli, renamed Katarinenfeld in honor of the sister of Tsar Alexander I Ekaterina Pavlovna in 1818, when 95 German families from Swabia settled here. After Sovietization in 1921, the city was renamed Luxembourg in honor of the German communist Rosa Luxemburg. In 1941, with the outbreak of the war, all Germans (except those who were married to Georgians) were deported to Siberia or Kazakhstan. In 1944 the city was renamed Bolnisi. There is a Bolnisi railway station of the Georgian Railway on the Marneuli-Kazreti line.
On December 31, 1967, the village of Bolnisi received the status of a city.
In Bolnisi there is the oldest Christian church in Georgia – Bolnisi Zion, built in the 5th century AD. e. The oldest inscription in Georgian has been preserved on the walls of the temple.
People’s Artist of the Azerbaijan SSR Rashid Yusifov and Hero of the Soviet Union Apoven Rostomyan were born in the city.

Population
As of 1968, 16.3 thousand inhabitants lived in Bolnisi, and according to the 1989 census, the population of the city was 15,047 people. Of these, 92% are Azerbaijanis, the rest are Georgians, Armenians, Ossetians. According to the 2002 census, the population of the city is 80% Georgians.

Yagub, Zelimkhan (1950-2016) – people’s poet of Azerbaijan, ashug, public figure; Member of the Azerbaijani Parliament of the 1st and 2nd convocations (1995-2005).
