Muharraq

Muharraq (Arabic: المحرق‎) is the second largest city in Bahrain. Until 1923 it was the capital of the country.

General information
Located on the island of the same name, in the northeast of the country. There is a traditional Arabic market (souk). Muharraq serves as the headquarters of Gulf Air and is also home to the Muharraq Club football team. The artificial archipelago Amwaj adjoins the city, on which there are many villas and other buildings, about 10 thousand people live.

Population
The population according to the 2001 census is 91,307.
