Tovuz

Tovuz (Russian name: Tauz) (Azerb. Tovuz) is a city and the administrative center of the Tovuz region of Azerbaijan. It is located 439 km from Baku on the left bank of the Tauzchay River.
The settlement was founded in 1812 by German settlers and was named Traubenfeld (German: Traubenfeld – Grape Field). In 1941, the Germans were deported, and the village was renamed.
Tauz received city status in 1947. According to the 1989 All-Union Population Census, 13,373 people lived in Tauz.
The city has a cement, asphalt, canning, wine factories, butter and cheese plant.

Geography
Tovuz region, located in the west of Azerbaijan, borders on Georgia and Armenia. The territory of the district is included in the basin of the Kura River. The rivers Tovuz, Zayam and Akhyndzha flow through the territory of the region. The climate is dry subtropical. The city is located on a mountain slope and is rich in beautiful nature and many springs. 32,000 hectares of the district are covered with forests. The region is rich in wildlife. Wolves, foxes, hares, varieties of partridge are widespread. There are good conditions for fishing, hunting for hares and water birds.

Salnikov, Yuri Grigorievich Soviet athlete, Olympic champion (1980), silver medalist of the Olympics, in equestrian sports.
