Sabirabad

Sabirabad (Azerbaijani Sabirabad) is a city and the administrative center of the Sabirabad region of Azerbaijan.

Geography
Sabirabad is a pier on the right bank of the Kura (at the confluence of the Araks). Near the city, near the village of Sugovushan, the Araks merges with the Kura.

History
At the end of the 19th century, the village of Petropavlovka was built on the territory of modern Sabirabad, where Ukrainians moved in 1887. At the beginning of the 20th century, the village began to develop and on August 8, 1930, Petropavlovka became a regional center. On October 2, 1931, Petropavlovka was renamed Sabirabad, in honor of the poet Mirza Alekper Sabir. In November 1952, the village received the status of a settlement, and on December 4, 1959, the status of a city.

Population
According to the All-Union Population Census of 1989, 18,612 people lived in Sabirabad.
