Gazakh

Gazakh (Azerbaijani Qazax) is a city in the west of Azerbaijan, the administrative center of the Gazakh region. It is located on the Akstafa River, at an altitude of 323 m above sea level, 9 km southwest of the Agstafa railway station.

History
In the 18th century, Gazakh was the capital of the Kazakh Sultanate. In the Russian Empire, Kazakh was the administrative center of the Kazakh district of the Elizavetpol province, 10 km (9 versts) from the Agstafa station of the Transcaucasian railway and 104 km (97½ ver.) from the city of Elizavetpol.
In 1909, Kazakh received the status of a city. In 1918, on the basis of the Azerbaijani branch of the Transcaucasian Teacher’s Seminary of the city of Gori, the Kazakh Teacher’s Seminary was established in the city, the first director of which was Firidun-bek Kocharlinsky. Since 1930 – the administrative center of the Kazakh region of Azerbaijan.

Population
According to the census of the Russian Empire in 1897, 1769 people lived in Kazakh, of which 802 (45.3%) Armenians, 601 (34%) Azerbaijanis (in the source – “Tatars”), 200 (11.3%) Russians, 60 (3.4%) Georgians, 45 (2.5%) Ukrainians and others. According to the “Caucasian calendar” for 1912, 1050 people lived in the city of Kazakh, mostly Azerbaijanis, indicated as “Tatars”. In 1970, about 13,000 people lived in the city, in 1991 – about 19,300 people. By 2013, about 21,000 people (10,200 men and 10,800 women) lived in Gazakh.
