Vayk

Vayk (Armenian: Վայք) is a city in Armenia in the Vayots Dzor region.

Geography
It is located 139 km from Yerevan on the Yerevan-Sisian-Goris highway. Surrounded by mountains from the north and south, the city stretches for about 1.5 km along the right bank of the Arpa River. About 1 km west of the city is an old bridge built in the 17th century and reconstructed in 1827 at the suggestion of Paskevich. Surb Trdat Church is located in the city.

History
In the past, the settlement located on the territory of Vayk was called Soylan (Armenian: Սոյլան). According to the “Caucasian calendar” of 1912, 14 people lived in the village of Soylan Sharur-Daralagyoz district of the Elizavetpol province, mostly Azerbaijanis, indicated in the calendar as “Tatars”. On October 12, 1956, a settlement was formed here, named after one of the Baku commissars – M. Azizbekov. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, the village received the status of a city and a new name – Vayk. In 1897, the population of the settlement was 22 people, in 1963 – 1,115, in 1976 – 4,644. According to the 2001 census, it was 6,024 people.
