Chambarak

Chambarak (arm. Ճամբարակ) is a city in Armenia in the Gegharkunik region in the upper reaches of the river Getik. Located 125 km from Yerevan near the border with Azerbaijan. The Berd-Chambarak and Dilijan-Chambarak highways pass through the city.

History
Founded in 1835-1840 by Russian settlers, mostly Old Believers who fled from harassment from official Orthodoxy, under the name Mikhailovka. In 1920, it was renamed Karmir Gyugh (Armenian Կարմիր գյուղ, translated from Armenian, “red village”). In 1972 it was renamed Krasnoselsk, in 1991 it received its modern name Chambarak. Population
The population, according to the 2011 census, is 5,850 people, of which 50.43% are women, 49.57% are men. National composition: Russians, Armenians, Kurds. The share of the Russian population has decreased significantly since 1991 – due to hostilities and the turbulent situation in this settlement bordering Azerbaijan during the Karabakh war.
