Hoeryong

Hweryeong (Korean: 회령시, 會寧市) is a city in North Korea in the province of Hamgyongbuk-do. The city is located next to the Tumannaya River, and across the river is the Chinese province of Jilin. Sanhe (Chinese: 三合鎮) in Longjing County is the nearest city across the river. Hoeryong is considered the birthplace of Kim Il Sung’s first wife and Kim Jong Il’s mother, Kim Jong Suk.
Concentration Center No. 22 (관리소22호) is located 20 km from the city.

History
Hweryeong was one of six outpost garrisons founded by Sejong the Great (1418–1450) to protect the population from the potentially dangerous semi-nomadic Jurchens who lived north of the Amnokkan River.
In early May 2007, the newly appointed chairman of the DPRK government, Kim Yong Il, visited Hoeryong. At this time, the chairman of the government of the DPRK brought with him by train 1 wagon of glass produced in South Korea and 3 wagons of cement. After delivering goods to the People’s Committee of Hoeryong, he instructed that the city of Hoeryong should be decorated, as the mother of leader Kim Jong Il, the heroine of the anti-Japanese revolution, Comrade Kim Jong Suk, was born here.

Economy
Hweryeong’s main industries are mining machinery and a paper mill. There are also many mines in the area.
