Zangelan

Zangelan (Azerbaijani Zəngilan) / Kovsakan (Armenian Կովսական) is a city in Transcaucasia; according to the administrative-territorial division of the unrecognized Nagorno-Karabakh Republic, which actually controls the settlement since November 1, 1993, it is located in the Kashatag region of the NKR, according to the administrative-territorial division of Azerbaijan, it is the administrative center of the Zangelan region of Azerbaijan.
The city is located on the right bank of the Voghji River. The inactive Minjevan-Kapan railway passes through the city.

History
The territory of modern Zangelan in ancient times and the Middle Ages was part of the Gavar Kovsakan of the Armenian historical region of Syunik, the eastern limits of which were limited by the Akera River. On the site of the present Zangelan was the place Verjnavan.
The city status was given to the settlement in 1967. According to the All-Union Census of the USSR (1989), 6968 people lived in Zangelan.

On October 29, 1993, during the Karabakh war, the territory of the Zangelan region was occupied by Armenian forces and since that time has been de facto controlled by the authorities of the unrecognized Nagorno-Karabakh Republic. As of 2005, the city’s population was less than 400.
