Knitting with fine yarns

Knitting with knitting needles from fine yarn involves the choice of knitting needles and yarn. The usual rule is that the thickness of the knitting needle should be equal to the thickness of the doubled knitting thread. But this rule is not always correct. Because, for example, products made from mohair threads are knitted with very thick knitting needles of at least the 5th number. Well, it happens that they use knitting needles and 4 numbers, but in this case, the thing knitted from mohair will have a very thick fluff, to say, and quickly fall off, literally after the first wash. Or it will become a solid carpet that cannot be fluffed with any brush.

Therefore, products from mohair thin threads are knitted on knitting needles number 6, no less. Moreover, the knitting needles should be wooden or bamboo, since the mohair tonic threads will slide off the metal knitting needles. And wooden knitting needles, due to their roughness, so to speak, will hold the canvas of mohair threads.

Knitting with knitting needles from thin yarn requires you to approach the choice of knitting needles with all responsibility.

Steel spokes are the strongest. Do not bend, do not break, retain shine. On such knitting needles it is excellent to drive a knitted fabric from edge to edge. The canvas glides over the steel spokes just fine.

Steel spokes, unfortunately, have a sensitive weight. Therefore, thick steel needles are not the best choice if you are going to knit something monumental.

Knitting with knitting needles from fine yarn, and if you choose steel knitting needles, it is a pleasure.

Aluminum spokes are slightly lighter than steel ones. And yes, they are significantly cheaper. But the big disadvantage of spokes made of aluminum is oxidation in air. Oxidized, aluminum knitting needles leave a mark on a product knitted from light yarn.

Recently, aluminum spokes are coated with Teflon. Thanks to this procedure, aluminum knitting needles get rid of their main drawback.

Usually aluminum spokes are made thick, no less than number 3, due to their ability to bend and break. Aluminum knitting needles are very good for teaching children to knit. Knitting with thin yarn, if the needles are aluminum, is also possible.

Plastic knitting needles are not very strong, they do not hold their shape well, although they are light. Plastic knitting needles are not used for knitting fine yarn. Basically, they are used for knitting from very thick yarn or cord.

Wooden knitting needles are very convenient for knitting. Usually wooden knitting needles are made from bamboo. Knitting with wooden needles is easy and pleasant – they do not knock like metal or aluminum ones. But over time, wooden knitting needles become rough, and these roughnesses cling to threads, especially thin ones.

Knitting with thin yarn is also possible on bone knitting needles. But this type of knitting needle is extremely rare, it is used for knitting openwork patterns.

The knitting needles are different – straight, circular, hosiery, auxiliary and for knitting the “braid” pattern.

Basically, knitters use straight knitting needles of different lengths from 20 to 40 centimeters. Usually these are two rods with pointed ends, but so that the fingertips do not tear. Often at one end of such a straight spoke there is a limiter, more often made of rubber. The limiter is needed so that the knitting does not slip off the knitting needle. Knitting with straight needles is good when the product is not too large. If the knitted fabric has a significant width and size, problems begin, how to keep heavy knitting on weight. This is where circular needles come to the rescue.

Circular knitting needles are two short rods of metal or other material connected by a plastic cable or fishing line. Knitting with thin yarn on this type of knitting needles is difficult, but possible. Just in this case, the thickness of the knitting needles and fishing line should almost match, otherwise it will be difficult to distill knitting from one edge to another. In addition, circular knitting needles allow you to knit without seams and without transitions from facial loops to purl.

Hosiery knitting needles are five knitting needles without a limiter. These are not too long metal rods without limiters. Socks, mittens, gloves are knitted with such knitting needles. When knitting these things, the loops are divided equally into four knitting needles, and the fifth is knitted in a circle.

Auxiliary knitting needles are straight and curved. Loops are removed on them while knitting pockets, for example, or fingers on mittens and gloves.

Knitting needles for knitting braids usually come in a set, which includes two straight knitting needles and one curved one, which is used to remove loops on it when crossing loops or a group of loops.

Knitting on knitting needles from fine yarn implies the choice of the same yarn.

Yarn is woolen, silk, cotton, linen, viscose, polyamide and shaped.

Most often knitted from woolen yarn, which is an ordinary sheep hair. There is yarn from goat wool – mohair and cashmere, from angora rabbit fluff – angora, from llama and camel wool – alpaca.

Woolen things, of course, retain the heat of the human body well, but things and pure woolen yarn have a significant drawback – they easily fall off, deform. Therefore, modern manufacturers of wool yarn add artificial or vegetable fibers to wool.

Cotton yarn is made from cotton fibers. The best option for creating fine yarn. Yes, and cotton yarn cannot be made thick – in this case, it will be heavy and completely clumsy, that is, elastic. But for all its shortcomings, products made from cotton yarn are strong, durable and pleasant to the touch. Cotton yarn is easy to mercerize.

Linen yarn is even stronger than cotton yarn. Products made from linen yarn do not deform, give the effect of chill in the heat, are hygroscopic, but easily wrinkle.

Silk yarn is the most expensive in terms of cost. Things made of silk yarn are afraid of alkalis and sunlight.

Viscose yarn is very similar to silk, but by origin, viscose yarn belongs to plant types of yarn, while silk is from the world of animal yarn. Things made of viscose yarn require a very careful attitude.

Finally, polyamide yarn, which is used only in mixtures with other types of yarn.
