Fine yarn – what is fine yarn?

Someone likes warm and textured clothes that will keep you warm in cold weather, and someone likes light, even airy ones that are nice to wear in hot summer weather. It is for knitting such elegant and openwork clothes that thin yarn is perfect.

Thin yarn – what is fine yarn?

First of all, it should be noted that the main indicator that determines the thickness of the yarn is called the metric number. It shows how many meters of a given thread per gram of yarn. For example, metric number 32/2. This means that for one gram of this yarn there are 32 meters of thread. Fine yarn includes yarn with numbers: No. 15.6 / 2, No. 16/2, and No. 32/2. The yarn number can also be determined in the following way. Take a ruler and tightly wind the thread one by one into divisions corresponding to one centimeter. After that, count how many threads fit in one centimeter.

Let’s say right away that if you knit by hand, on knitting needles or crochet, then you don’t have to remember these numbers at all, they are only needed by those who knit on a typewriter. Due to the strong twist of the fibers twisted into a single thread, fine yarn on bobbins is one of the best options for machine knitting. It should be borne in mind that when knitting on a machine, only those threads that are prone to elastic deformation can be used. If necessary, thin yarn can be folded into several threads. When machine knitting, you should also consider varieties of fine yarn. Here are some of them, the descriptions of which will be useful to you in your work.

Yarn No. 32/2 woolen, twisted, combed. It has high hygroscopicity, excellent heat-shielding properties and increased durability. This yarn is quite fibrous, which leads to felting. From it you can knit any kind of products.

Yarn No. 32/2 semi-woolen, mixed. This type of yarn is highly resistant to shrinkage.

Yarn No. 32/2 synthetic (acrylic). Hygroscopic, in knitting it is preferred for creating children’s models.

Metallic thread. It can be found in combination with natural wool or wool blend thread. A variety of openwork products are knitted from it: scarves, shawls, stoles, scarves and much more.

Cotton yarn No. 40/2, 34/2, 54/2. This yarn is strong and hygroscopic, it is slightly elastic, which is why it is often deformed in products. Hosiery, models of outerwear are usually knitted from it.

Woolen hardware yarn from tolling wool. This yarn is quite loose, but at the same time stiff and uneven. Suitable for knitting outerwear.

A yarn containing reconstituted wool and synthetic fibres. This yarn is fluffy and loose, but less durable than combed yarn. It is good to knit upper jerseys from it.

Like any other yarn, fine yarn can be made from materials of various origins: natural (wool, cotton, etc.); artificial (acrylic, cellulose, etc.). The most common materials for fine yarn are, of course, cotton and wool. Today, however, fine blended yarns, containing wool and a small amount of cotton or synthetic fiber, are becoming increasingly popular among knitters. This is due to the fact that products knitted from such varieties of yarn are not only attractive in appearance, but also distinguished by easy care. They wash and iron beautifully. Such combinations can, if desired, be made independently at home. By adding woolen thread No. 32/2 in one addition to cotton darning, you can knit wonderful summer clothes or models for sports from the resulting yarn, and with the addition of woolen thread in 2-3 additions you will create warm clothes for winter. The main characteristics of fine yarn will depend, first of all, on which threads prevail in its composition.

Thin yarn – what is fine yarn? This question probably worries you in terms of practical application. You choose the model you want to create from it and the technique by which it will be executed. Perhaps you are not sure if your fine yarn is suitable for creating any product. In addition, not every pattern can be knitted with fine yarn. In order to check how the yarn will look in the product and whether the chosen knitting technique is suitable, knit a small sample canvas, a square measuring 10/10 centimeters. At the same time, you can check what the yarn will be in the care by washing and ironing the sample. It should be borne in mind that when purchasing thin yarn with the intention of knitting openwork napkins, with which you plan to decorate the interior of your home in the future, you should not choose synthetic yarn. Thin yarn of this quality will slip off the hook, which will give you a lot of trouble.

There are also the finest types of gossamer yarn. Sometimes it is called “single-fiber”, which does not quite reflect the essence. Two or more fibers are twisted in it, but despite this it remains very thin. Monofilament Scottish yarn is the finest yarn that does not fit any standard. This yarn is used for knitting the finest shawls.

Thin can be yarn in 4 and 5 additions (American, Australian, New Zealand). Yarn in 4 additions is especially effective in openwork products or in jacquard knitting. It is suitable for knitting large fragments.

Thin yarn – what is fine yarn? Now you are sure to easily answer this question yourself. Those needlewomen who have not used thin yarn before may want to master the technique of working with it.

It is important to know that thin yarn is best suited for everyday products. She can knit on knitting needles, crochet and on a knitting machine. It is suitable for creating napkins, for knitting for adults and children, that is, for the entire range of products.

If a skein of fine yarn fell into your hands, then it’s only up to your imagination and skill.
