Choosing a dog breed. Elena A. Kozheva

"mad" with happiness, does not really pay attention to these important signs. Don't forget about them.

After you have chosen a puppy and taken him home, you must remember that when selling a puppy from producers with a pedigree, the breeder is obliged to immediately give you a certificate of origin (puppy metrics), which, upon reaching 6 months, is for service and decorative and 8 months - for hunting breeds, it changes to a real pedigree after the puppy is examined by a licensed expert at the exhibition. The exception is the St. Petersburg Club of Blood Hunting Dog Breeding (SPbKKOS) at the Leningrad Regional Society of Hunters and Fishermen (LOOOiR). There, first, the breeder distributes the puppies, enters the names and addresses of the owners in the inspection report and hands them over to the club. Only after that he receives certificates of origin and distributes them to the owners. At the same time, he fills in your line in the inspection report with you. If you have reason not to trust, ask for the address and phone number of the club, contact the cynologist and the head of the breed and make sure that this litter is really registered there.

A competent, responsible breeder should tell you about the intricacies of keeping his breed, in the future help with advice and track the fate of the puppy. For example, if for some reason you have to part with the dog, he, if possible, should help. Just remember that this is not a legal obligation. In any case, you must inform him about this and give the coordinates of the new owners.

Once you have finally purchased a puppy, take him to a trusted, trusted veterinarian by calling him home. If the breeder has not vaccinated for some reason, vaccinate the puppy. Remember that vaccines deteriorate after just a few hours of storage at the wrong temperature. Therefore, by no means do not purchase vaccine from unknown sources. Your veterinarian will give you more detailed care instructions. If possible, do not take your puppy to the veterinary clinic because of the risk of catching an infectious disease there. If, for financial reasons, you still have to visit a veterinary clinic, then remember the following.

First: at least one special puppy vaccination at 2–2.5 months is MANDATORY.

Second: observe the following conditions: either keep the puppy in your arms all the time, or put him on a rag, which you then throw away. Give puppy dewormers 7-10 days before visiting. Do not skimp on the quality of the vaccine and deworming products. Never use a cheap rabies vaccine.

Remember that vaccination against leptospirosis is done only after 4 months, and against rabies - after 8 months. Of the reliable vaccines, Nobivak, Vanguard can be recommended.
What "thing" do I need?
Since professional classification is difficult for a beginner and can confuse him, I felt it possible to offer you a simpler scheme. It is based on what you primarily want from your future dog. After that, I stipulate the main advantages and disadvantages of a particular breed. Of course, I can’t describe all 400 breeds, therefore, if you are interested in the features of the content and behavior of the Westphalian Dachshund Brakk, the big blue Gascon hound, Lagoto Romagnolo or Hokkaido (this is not only the name of the island, but also the breed), etc., here i pass. I can say one thing: to purchase a puppy of these breeds, delve into the jungle of foreign-language Internet sites. If you are interested in learning about the Briard, the Bouvier of Flanders or the Siberian Husky, rare, but still having a place in Russia, then you can say a few words about them. In any case, advertisements for the sale of puppies of these breeds can be found on Russian-language Internet sites and in dog magazines. So, you are going to get a puppy for……

For protection
First, decide where you will keep the dog?

In a country house or in an apartment? For keeping outdoors around the clock, you should pay attention to the classic domestic breeds: Central Asian, Caucasian, South Russian Shepherd Dogs, Black Terrier, or Western breeds, it is important in what climatic conditions they were formed. If the climate of their historical homeland was much softer than the Russian one, then, most likely, your security guard will spend most of the time basking in a warm booth, rather than guarding you and your property. Let's say your dog's guarding instinct dominates, then you run the risk of getting a chronically ill dog suffering from a cold kidney. The Doberman is an excellent street guard dog, but somewhere in the South of France….

Street content for domestic breeds is even more preferable. To raise a full-fledged "Caucasian" or "Asian" in an apartment, you will need a lot of time, most of which you will have to spend on long walks and physical education of your pet. But why not? I was familiar with quite decent representatives of these breeds, grown in small apartments. Just remember that if you don't follow these rules, you run the risk of getting a dog that looks more like a greyhound in its physique (getting a greyhound and also forgetting about it, you get a creature from jokes about dystrophics). Don't forget about genetics and heredity. For your dog to really look like what you see in books and magazines, his parents must match these pictures. If you feed a lapdog hard in order to get a mastiff, I warn you, you will not succeed.
Advice

...
There is, however, one place where such a genetic miracle can happen. This is a bird market. A classic anecdote about how happy owners, having bought a fluffy white lapdog puppy at this market, grow a South Russian Shepherd Dog out of it. But this is an extreme case. Usually, under the guise of a husky or a German shepherd, typical mongrels are hiding. And the little curly puppies sold as pygmy poodles later grow into cute crossbreeds. Their parents are various combinations of spaniels, lapdogs, dachshunds, small terriers and all the same poodles.

So remember, if you are not ready for such surprises, you should not go to the bird market for a thoroughbred puppy.

Oddly enough, the exception is rare, little-known breeds. Their owners tend to find it difficult to distribute puppies for this very reason. And they go to the market. My advice in this situation is not to take a puppy right away. Meet the owner, go to his house, look at the mother of the puppies, check puppy documents. This is, firstly, a certificate of the origin of the puppy, an act of inspection of the puppies by the club where the mating was registered, the pedigree of the mother and, if possible, the father of the puppies. Contact the head and cynologist of the club. If this is a small club or a private kennel, do not hesitate to ask for a certificate of registration in the leading cynological organizations RFSS, RFOS, ANCOR, ROLS, united under the auspices of the RKF.

Do you want exotic for your country house? Try the Komondor, the Pyrenean Shepherd (its long-haired variety), the Tibetan Great Dane, or the Kuvasz. Just keep in mind that the cost of this exotic will be high.

Don't keep street guard dogs chained all the time. Arrange a spacious aviary for them to rest and regularly walk outside the protected area. Otherwise, your formidable dog will finally go berserk.

Remember that large shepherd dogs, first of all, guarded the herds from the encroachments of wolves and hunters for other people's goods, and in second place is their ability to manage the herd, being in close contact with a person. Their contact with the shepherd was not so close. I'll explain in more detail. Imagine a cold night in the harsh mountains of the Caucasus and an attack by a pack of wolves on a herd of sheep. If the "Caucasian" first rushes to the owner like a respectable German Shepherd, in order to receive instructions for further actions, then a dozen other sheep will have already been destroyed. So don't be surprised if your dog doesn't listen to you very much. You can often hear impartial statements about these breeds, which, they say, are stupid and incapable of training. Nonsense! They просто осознают свою мощь и независимость в силу озвученных исторических причин. This also implies that the owner of such a dog must have an imperious (but not cruel!) And strong psyche in order to achieve obedience and respect from such a dog. The last sentence fully applies to the popular service breed Rottweiler, which belongs to the group of breeds more suitable for apartment maintenance. The notoriety that has accompanied this breed with us for the last ten years is not without foundation. And not only with us. In developed Western countries, in order to purchase a Rottweiler (a Doberman, by the way, too), you must register it with the police. There he is equated to a melee weapon. In some US states, it is banned altogether. Except In addition, you need to confirm your mental sanity in the relevant authorities. Our legislation, however, not only does not have such laws, but worse, does not have the necessary article for causing grievous bodily harm by a dog. Moreover, the problem in keeping these dogs is not limited to the society surrounding your family. A dog as a pack animal perceives you and your household as a pack. And every flock has its own hierarchy. And she will perceive your child as a being lower in rank than
