Time zone

The islands of Kiribati are located in three time zones.

Time on the Line Islands is ahead of Moscow by 11 hours (GMT/UTC +14), on the Phoenix Islands – by 10 hours (GMT/UTC +13), in the Gilbert Islands – by 9 hours (GMT/UTC +12).

The “date line” passes directly through the territory of Kiribati, therefore the island groups of Line and Phoenix, which lie to the east of it (i.e., already in the western hemisphere), are conditionally brought to the eastern hemisphere in order to avoid confusion with a time paradox, when there are still, for example, Sunday, while in the Gilbert Islands it is already Monday.

On January 1, 1995, the government of Kiribati announced that its entire territory would be in the same time zone (GMT / UTC +12), but in practice, due to the length of the island group, this is not respected and time is most often indicated in accordance with the zone.

There is no daylight saving time.
