Safety

Required and recommended vaccinations
A yellow fever vaccination certificate is required for all travelers over 1 year of age arriving from areas where the disease is prevalent. Vaccination is not required for transit passengers who do not leave the airport.

The risk of contracting malaria is virtually non-existent throughout the country. Vaccination against typhoid and polio is recommended for all travelers. Hepatitis B vaccination is recommended for all travelers over the age of one year. It is also recommended to take increased precautions against diarrhea, hemorrhagic fever, diphtheria, tuberculosis and fungal diseases of the skin.

Sanitation and hygiene
All water should be considered potentially unfit for consumption. All water used for drinking, brushing teeth, or making ice should be boiled first. Milk and dairy products are usually pasteurized and are safe to consume. Meat, seafood and fish are considered safe, but it is still recommended to consume them only after preliminary heat treatment, preferably hot. Vegetables should be thoroughly washed and pre-treated, and fruits should be peeled.

dangerous animals
The waters around the islands are home to several varieties of sharks and many poisonous sea creatures. Some types of fish contain poisonous toxins in their meat, so it is always recommended to consult with the locals about the safety of a particular product. It is recommended that you never eat the meat of local barracuda. When swimming, it is recommended to use wetsuits, and to enter the water on an unequipped coast – durable shoes that protect your feet from the needles of marine animals and sharp edges of coral fragments. There are no dangerous or poisonous animals on the islands themselves.

Solar Activity
Since the climate is very hot and solar radiation is aggressive, it is necessary to take certain measures against solar radiation, heat damage and dehydration. It is recommended to bring sunscreen, hats and light cotton clothing covering the body. Even when immersed in water, you can get very “burnt” in just an hour – crystal clear water works like focusing lens and does not save from ultraviolet radiation at all.
