Security

Bulgaria is a fairly safe country for travelers. However, there are a number of points that it is desirable to know before going on vacation to this country.
Crime in Bulgaria

The level of economic development in Bulgaria by European standards is not very high; due to economic turmoil, various rallies and demonstrations often take place here. During such actions, interruptions in the operation of public transport and taxis are possible.
The greatest risk for tourists is represented by minor crimes. In crowded places, on transport and on the busy streets of local resorts, it is easy to become a victim of pickpockets. Criminals very often work in groups.
Sometimes scammers try to deceive tourists near ATMs when withdrawing cash. Make sure that the PIN code of your bank card does not get to strangers.
Many complaints come to the work of Bulgarian taxi drivers – some of them greatly inflate the prices for their services, especially if the car is not equipped with a meter.
In residential areas of large cities, car locks are often broken into, especially if valuables are in a conspicuous place.
In recent years, the number of premeditated murders per 100,000 inhabitants in Bulgaria has been about 2 per year (for comparison, in Russia this figure is slightly more than 10).
Road safety

Most of the state roads in Bulgaria are in good condition. However, outside the main highways, the quality of the road surface often leaves much to be desired.
There is a risk of landslides along the mountain roads. In the winter season, many trails become very slippery; they dramatically increase the number of potholes. In addition, sometimes there are unlit sections of the road – in such places, both pedestrians and drivers should be especially careful.
Natural Disasters and Natural Hazards in Bulgaria

Weather conditions in Bulgaria change very quickly, both in the mountains and on the seashore. In winter, snow storms and ice occur here; in the warm season – squalls and tornadoes. In summer, due to the heat, the risk of getting sunstroke or heatstroke increases.
