January 26 – Australia Day. It was on this day in January 1788 that the first English settlers arrived in Sydney Harbour, where they founded New South Wales. On Christmas Island, this holiday began to be actively celebrated after 1988, when all of Australia widely celebrated the bicentenary of the founding of Sydney, and Australia Day began to be celebrated in all territories of the Green Continent.

March 23 – Labor Day. Celebrated on the fourth Monday in March. It is celebrated in many states of Australia, with almost every territory setting its own date for this. This holiday on Christmas Island is a non-working day.

April 3 – Good Friday. One of the most significant Christian holidays, celebrated two days before Easter. On this day, special services are held in the temples of the island. A day of strict fasting, in which you can not have fun and make noise.

April 25 – Defender of the Fatherland Day. The inhabitants of the island, who have not yet forgotten the Japanese occupation, enjoy deep respect for the armed forces, so this holiday is one of their favorites. The first army corps on the continent were created in 1916, and the inhabitants of Christmas Island served in them, taking part in the world war going on in Europe. On the day of the holiday, flowers are laid on the island at the monuments of fallen soldiers.

July 18 – Eid ul-Fitr (Ramadan Bairam). On this day, Muslims living on Christmas Island celebrate the end of Lent. First, they visit mosques, and then lavish feasts are arranged, since it is strictly forbidden to fast on this day.

in September – the feast of sacrifice (Kurban Bayram). It is celebrated by the inhabitants of Christmas Island, who profess Islam. On this day, it is customary to sacrifice an animal, and the cooked meat is partly served on the festive table, and partly distributed to the poor.

October is Territory Day. Celebrated on the first Monday in October. After the occupation during the Second World War by Japan, the territory of the island became a British colony, and in 1958 it gained independence and came under the protectorate of Australia. This event is celebrated on the day of the territory.

December 26 – Boxing Day. This holiday, celebrated immediately after the Nativity of Christ, is also commonly called the Day of St. Stephen, the Christian great martyr. On this day, it is customary to give each other gifts and visit each other.
