Rize

Rize (tur. Rize) is the administrative center of the province of the same name in northeastern Turkey.

Geography
The city was built on the Black Sea near a small bay in Lazistan, on a narrow strip of land between the mountains and the sea.

History
The first mention of the port of Rize is found in Arrian, in the Periplus of the Euxine Sea. Translated from Greek, “ριζα” means “slope”. During the time of Justinian I, Rize was fortified and was called Rhisos.
In the Ottoman Empire, Rize was part of the Vilayet of Trebizond. The city had the production of linens and copper products, trade was developed. According to the Ottoman data of 1844, there were 3927 houses in Rize, of which 310 (7.9%) were Muslim houses and 3617 (92.1%) were Christian houses (mostly Armenians).
In 1883 – 1886. the Russian vice-consul in Rize (and an unspoken military agent) in Rize was captain N. N. Peshkov. In 1886 he was replaced by A. I. Gippius. In 1901, Lieutenant Colonel V. T. Maevsky was a military agent in Rize.
In 1912, there were about 2,500 inhabitants. In 1912, the following lived in the port city and region: Muslims (mostly Laz) – 93,176 people, Greeks – 1,424 people.

In the First World War, Riese was taken by Russian amphibious assault. The strike group was commanded by Senior Lieutenant Mikhail Domershchikov. On the morning of March 5, 1916, the Batumi detachment of ships, under the flag of Captain 1st Rank M. Rimsky-Korsakov, landed two battalions in the rear of the Turks. The paratroopers drove the enemy out of the fortifications on the Boyuk-Dere River and by evening went on the offensive on Rize. Fierce fighting went on for almost two days. The fate of the city was decided by the dashing landing of Domershchikov, landed from a minesweeper under the cover of the Kubanets gunboat and three destroyers. Senior Lieutenant Domershchikov managed not only to bring his minesweeper almost to the very shore, but also jumped into the water first, dragging the attackers with him.
“He acted bravely and skillfully, as quite recently on the passes of Galicia. In fact, he was an excellent Marine. Few of his colleagues at that time knew the tricks and tricks of land combat. Domershchikov comprehended all this there, in the machine-gun team at the Wild Division.
– writes Nikolai Cherkashin ..
“With a handful of scouts and sailors, Lieutenant Domershchikov broke into the positions of the Turkish field battery. The brave men killed the servants, turned the guns and scattered the squadron of Janissaries with quick fire.
– wrote in 1916 the French military correspondent (report “Russian Hero”).
As a result, Rize was taken. Domershchikov was appointed commandant of the port city.
This heroic episode of the First World War is dedicated to the watercolor by D. A. Bystroletov “The Storming of Rize” (1918).
In 1958, the Research Institute of Tea Growing was founded in Rize.
