Zgharta

Zgharta (Arabic: زغرتا‎) is a city in northwestern Lebanon, in the province of North Lebanon. The administrative center of the district of the same name.

History
The plain on which the city is located was inhabited by humans already in the Neolithic era. This is evidenced by the objects found in the vicinity of Zgarta, related to the Karaun culture (English) Russian ..
In 2007, during the Second Lebanon War, thousands of Shiite refugees found refuge in the city, fleeing the conflict-ridden south of the country.

Geography
The city is located in the western part of the province, approximately 5 kilometers southeast of the city of Tripoli and 65 kilometers north-northeast (NNE) of the capital, Beirut. The absolute height is 129 meters above sea level.

Population
The city’s population was estimated at 11,439 in 2013.

Transport
The nearest airport is in Tripoli.
