Bayt El-Faqih

Bayt al-Faqih, or Beit el-Faqih (Arabic: بیت الفقیه‎) is a city in western Yemen, in the Hodeida governorate.

History
The foundation of the city dates back to the beginning of the 18th century. Bayt el-Faqih was the center of the coffee trade, which was exported by caravans to the ports of Hodeida and Mocha.

Geographic location
The city is located in the central part of the governorate, in the southern part of the Tihama desert, at an altitude of 122 meters above sea level. Bait al-Faqih is located approximately 45 kilometers southeast of Hodeidah, the governorate’s capital, and 125 kilometers southwest of Sana’a, the country’s capital.

Economy
In the past, the city’s economy was based on the coffee trade. Nowadays, the main occupations of the population are weaving and jewelry production. Tobacco, cotton, jasmine sambac, cereals and sesame are cultivated in the vicinity of the city.
