Ahwar

Ahwar (Arabic: أحور‎) is a city in Yemen, located near the central part of the Gulf of Aden. Wadi Akhwar flows into the Gulf of Aden near the city. The city is located in the governorate of Abyan and is the main city of the mudiriya (district) of Akhwar in this governorate.

History of the city
Akhvar was the main city (capital) of the Lower Aulaki Sultanate from 1888 to 1967. In 1888, the Sultanate and Great Britain signed an informal defense agreement. The monarchy was abolished in 1967, and the territory of the Sultanate became part of the People’s Republic of South Yemen.

In 2008, a reception center for Somali refugees was opened in Akhwar.
