Ize

Ize (pers. ايذه‎) is a city in southwestern Iran, in the province of Khuzestan. The administrative center of Shahrestan is Ize.

Geography and climate
The city is located in the northeast of Khuzestan, in the mountainous area of the western Zagros, at an altitude of 824 meters above sea level. Ize is located approximately 120 kilometers northeast of Ahvaz, the administrative center of the ostan, and 190 kilometers southwest of Isfahan. In the spring-summer period, a moderate mild type of climate prevails; however, winters in Iza are some of the coldest in all of Khuzestan. Ize is a significant regional agricultural center. The main product produced is rice. Mining is also quite developed.

History
The city arose as the center of a small mountain kingdom Ayapir (Ayapir), the territory of which was included by the rulers of Elam into their empire. From the Elamite era, a number of rock bas-reliefs, mostly of religious content, have survived to this day. There are also bas-reliefs depicting scenes from the life of the royal court. In 2008, at the initiative of the Iranian government, the bas-reliefs were proposed for inclusion in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. In later times, the city was known as Izaj (Izaj), and also as Malamir (Mālamir). Ise received his modern name in 1935.
